I never put much thought into what went on at a restaurant until I started working at one. The only thing I really knew was that you was supposed to tip at least 15%. Who would have thought that servers only make $2.13? I wouldn't have. Sure, some days I come home with more than what equals out to be minimum wage, but not every day. So what about those people who don't tip anything? Do they not know you're supposed to tip? Do they just not care? Do they think servers make minimum wage and that a tip is just that...a tip for good service? With all of that said, the no tipping or not tipping adequately according to your bill does not compare to the way some people act. I have been so surprised by the actions of some people. Am I sheltered? Maybe..but I don't think so. I just think I was taught how to act towards people no matter how upset you may be. When you are an adult, you should know how to say please and thank you and those words should always be used. No matter what. If your service is slow, you should still say please and thank you. You don't know what is going on behind the scenes and you are not the only table in the restaurant. Also, if you are an adult, you should not snatch things from your servers hands. That is rude. A couple things that people should know that ticks servers off more than almost anything: 1) Don't ask for a straw before all of the drinks are sat down, more than likely the server will give you a straw when he/she is finished giving out ALL of the drinks; 2) Speak up. It is usually loud in restaurants and the server is usually standing while you are sitting. We can't hear mumble. If you do not speak clearly and your food is wrong, I'm sorry. 3)Treat your server like you would want your son/daughter to be treated. It's like the saying "treat others like you'd want to be treated" but better because no parent wants to see their child be mistreated. If you wouldn't want someone speaking to your child in a manner in which you are speaking then don't speak to your server in that way. It could just as easily be your child out there working all day and night to get through college.
I guess that is my rant and rave on servers and the way they shoud be treated. One other thought...Some days I have the best days at work talking to people and just having an honest conversation with them. You never know what kind of impression you are going to have on someone's day by genuinely asking them how they are doing and telling them that they are doing a great job.
